There is a growing body of evidence that suggests the effective functioning of marine reserves is dependent on the dispersal and recruitment of larvae. Enhanced production inside reserves is predicted to lead to a net larval export and increased settlement and recruitment outside reserve boundaries. However, larval retention in bays is also well documented. Since bays are increasingly being used as reserve areas, planktonic larvae of benthic marine invertebrates were sampled from two semi-enclosed marine reserves during flood and ebb tides to determine whether these bays are acting as net exporters of larvae. Neither reserve was a net importer or exporter of species richness, larval abundance or diversity, although one reserve showed a small export of species richness during the hours of darkness. Both reserves balanced the net import of some species with a net export of others, which was generally related to adult or larval abundance, although exceptions were found in one reserve. Significant effects of light were found, with the net import or export of some species occurring exclusively during either the hours of daylight or darkness. Deepwater sculpin, Myoxocephalus thompsoni (Girard), were sampled from six stations from the 15–100 m depth contours in Lake Michigan between April 1983 and July 1984. In south-eastern Lake Michigan M. thompsoni lay benthic eggs in offshore waters, which hatch between November and August, with peak hatching in March. Abundance of larvae in pelagic samples was higher offshore than inshore, but larval size was greater and development more advanced at inshore stations, indicating an inshore movement after hatching. Larvae reached metamorphosis at 20 mm and settled to the bottom beginning in July. Pelagic larvae 20–40 mm were found in the lower water column at all stations, but newly settled individuals were only captured with bottom trawls at inshore locations (≤60 m depth). Data from ichthyoplankton and bottom trawl samples in 1983 and 1984 indicated that locations for successful settlement of larvae to the bottom extended only as deep as the shallowest fringe of the adult population (> 50 m in 1983). In 1983, maximum density of larvae reached 0.4 individuals m−3 by June. Survival from the pelagic larval stage to the demersal young-of-year stage in 1983/1984 was c . 0.1–0.4%. The specific mechanism of mortality at the time of transition to a demersal habit has not been determined.  相似文献

Ascaris lumbricoides and Ascaris suum are two closely related parasites that infect humans and pigs. The zoonotic potential of A. suum has been a matter of debate for decades. Here we sought to investigate the potential human infection by A. suum and its immunological alterations. We orally infected five healthy human subjects with eggs embraced by A. suum. The infection was monitored for symptoms and possible respiratory changes, by an interdisciplinary health team. Parasitological, hematological analyses, serum immunoglobulin, cytokine profiles, and gene expression were evaluated during the infection. Our results show that A. suum is able to infect and complete the cycle in humans causing A. lumbricoides similar symptoms, including, cough, headache, diarrhea, respiratory discomfort and chest x-ray alterations coinciding with larvae migration in the lungs. We also observed activation of the immune system with production of IgM and IgG and a Th2/Th17 response with downregulation of genes related to Th1 and apoptosis. PCA (Principal componts analysis) show that infection with A. suum leads to a change in the immune landscape of the human host. Our data reinforce the zoonotic capacity of A. suum and bring a new perspective on the understanding of the immune response against this parasite.  相似文献

Because hosts utilized by parasitoids are vulnerable to further oviposition by conspecifics, host guarding benefits female wasps. The present study aims to test whether female adults regulate brood guarding behaviour by host discrimination in a solitary parasitoid Trissolcus semistriatus by presenting an intact or parasitized host egg mass to a female adult. Virgin females without oviposition experience have host discrimination ability, which enables them to adjust the number of eggs laid in the hosts. Mating experience increases superparasitism by female adults, whereas mated females achieve a higher discrimination ability as a result of oviposition experience and show a lower superparasitism rate. As expected, females exhibit brood guard after parasitizing an intact host egg mass, whereas those females visiting a previously parasitized host egg mass, do not. Because the survival of eggs in superparasitized hosts is relatively low, regulating brood guarding behaviour by host discrimination is adaptive for female wasps.  相似文献

Summary During the course of sea urchin development, from early blastula to pluteus larva, there are two major visible processes toward which all activities seem to be focused. They are the differentiation of the larval skeleton by the primary mesenchyme cells and the differentiation of the primitive gut by the secondary mesenchyme cells. These activities take place within the shell-like layer of epithelial cells, or ectodermal wall. The interactive role of the ectodermal wall with the mesenchyme cells is not yet clearly understood. A number of earlier studies have proposed that the ectoderm may have an inductive influence on the mesenchyme cells and that its inner surface forms a molecular template for guiding the mesenchyme cells. In this report, we suggest an additional role for the ectodermal wall. We show that some primary mesenchyme cells and secondary mesenchyme cells insert between the cells of the ectodermal wall in order to firmly anchor the anlage of the larval skeleton and primitive gut during differentiation. This mechanism may provide a physical basis for maintaining the stable positional relationship of the anlage during development.  相似文献

 The fully enclosed Taiaro lagoon is hypersaline (42.5 psu) and non-tidal; constant salinity and water level result from strong evaporation balanced by low percolation through the lagoon floor. Seawater can flow over the atoll rim during exceptionally high seas and may then replenish lagoonal communities with propagules of oceanic origin. The distinctive water chemistry of the lagoon suggests a possible way of identifying these immigrants. We established this potential by analysing stable isotopes of carbon and oxygen in the recent growth layers of otoliths of two adult reef fishes, Chaetodon ulietensis and Acanthurus triostegus, collected from both sides of the atoll rim. Fish from the two locations were discriminated by their isotopic signatures, suggesting that analysis of the microchemical signatures deposited during the larval development could be used in future work to determine which individuals and species complete their life-cycles in this unusual lagoon. Larval triphenism and the evolution of alternative life-cycles in a microbotrophic nematode: Rhabditis (P.) orbitalis – a larval parasite in the eye orbits of murid rodents Along with the normal third stage larva and the resistant dauerlarva, Rh. orbitalis posesses an infective larva, which is an obligate parasite in the eye orbits of mice and voles. Dauerlarvae as well as infective larvae develop from a common pre-stage («girdle-larva»), determined by the quality of food stored in the intestinal cells. – Dauerlarvae may tolerate desiccation (at room-temperature and -humidity) up to 4 weeks. If stored in tap water (at 6°C), they will survive for some month being able to restore development. – Infective larvae never survive desiccation but can also be stored in tap water at low temperatures. Food uptake from the lachrymal fluid of a host is needed prior to restoring development. The phenomenon involved is referred to as a necessary adaptation to the ecological conditions in the rodents' nests. Although mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) have been extensively investigated in reef-building corals, the sources of these MAAs and the process of their interconversion remain a topic of interest. Here we examined ontogenetic change in the abundance of MAAs in planula larvae of the spawning scleractinian coral Goniastrea retiformis in the absence of zooxanthellae and other dietary input. In order to examine the potential contribution of prokaryotes in the synthesis of MAAs in animal tissue, one group of larvae were treated with the antibiotic rifampicin. High concentrations of MAAs (mycosporine-glycine, shinorine, palythinol, asterina-330), were present in the asymbiotic eggs and adults; however, no MAAs were present in the endosymbiotic zooxanthellae. We documented a steady decline in the total MAA concentrations through time in larvae treated with rifampicin; however, in the absence of antibiotic there was a significant increase in the concentration of MAAs, driven by a sharp increase in the abundance of shinorine and palythinol between day 3 and 7. Our results suggest that MAA synthesis and conversion in G. retiformis larvae occurred in the absence of symbiotic zooxanthellae, and indicate a possible contribution of prokaryotes associated with the animal tissue to these processes.  相似文献

Planktotrophic invertebrate larvae have two dissociable stages during development, a facultative feeding period, whose length is determined by the amount of maternal provisioning in the egg, and an obligate feeding period, whose length is determined by the quantity of exogenous energy needed to reach metamorphic competence. Here we set out to experimentally test the impact of feeding during the facultative feeding period at two food concentrations (limiting and nonlimiting) on larval development time and juvenile quality. We used two closely related subtropical sand dollar species that differ in the quantity of maternal investment for these comparisons: Leodia sexiesperforata (large egg, long facultative feeding period) and Mellita tenuis (small egg, short facultative feeding period). We found that feeding during the facultative period accelerates development to metamorphosis only in M. tenuis and only at the high food ration. Feeding during the facultative feeding period had no effect on development time for M. tenuis at a food limiting concentration and for L. sexiesperforata at either food concentration. Furthermore, we found feeding during the facultative period to significantly increase quantity of carbohydrates and lipids at metamorphosis only for M. tenuis in nonlimiting food concentration. Thus, our data reveal a two-fold benefit of the facultative feeding period for a poorly provisioned species under high food conditions but little effect on a well-provisioned species.
